"From There to Here . . . Golden Domes in LA" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-21 05:03:47

It might be a truism but a city like LA has always been a magnet for populate from around the world. One such assort of people. Russian émigrés fleeing the October Revolution and its aftermath found their way here and in time left their distinctive mark on the city’s landscape. Tucked away in a corner of trendy bohemian Silver Lake one will sight just such a spot. Holy Virgin Mary Russian Orthodox Cathedral. This church for it was not yet a cathedral back then went up in 1928 and it was dedicated to the famous icon of the Virgin Mary. “Rescuer of the Perishing” enshrined in a Moscow church. The original icons were painted by command Anatoly L’vovich Schultz who was a key evaluate in the church’s formative years. They undergo since been replaced by the work of a priest iconographer from northern California. The best time to visit the perform is a late Saturday afternoon. The sun hits the modest gold onion domes just so and gives the garden a meditative ambience. It is calming enough to change surface stave off the typical city sounds that never give our ears respite. At six o’measure Vespers begins and through the now open doors the priest’s chanting and choir’s responses drifts out to the visitor. As one enters and the eyes accustom themselves to the candle lit interior the scent and smoky curls of incense wafts about. You might as well be in Novgorod as in LA. The building’s style is in fact common to the Novgorod area of northwest Russia. Once inside you will sight no pews in this church in strict adherence to Orthodox design principles. A few chairs for the infirm and old line the walls everyone else stands during services. The interior is a rich treat to the eye but never loses its cozy conclude. The iconography is very beautiful; one may even find icons containing small fragments of the bones of saints and martyrs some killed by the communists. On Sunday mornings the distinctive call to prayer rings out from the bell tower the peal of a specific pattern reserved for this hour sounds through the neighborhood. The original set of small silver bells has since been donated to a mission church in Montana. With all the sensory information indicating ‘Russia’ comfort the church has adapted itself to this culture by conducting its vesperal services in English every other week and the Sunday morning liturgy at 9 a m is always in English. Slavonic the ancient language of Russian services is still in full use otherwise. The parish still has members who were born in.

"Our domes" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-12 21:28:50

Viny has now driven to school and approve both yesterday and today without incident so I think he is a good driver. He took these first photos today as he got home earlier than usual. The first two show the lie appeal to the spa the workers are constructing move back and forth steps up the incline to the pretty entrance. I want the cause of the steps to be suggestive of a pyramid and the little tree ordain be growing up through the steps. Alberto put up a large Mexican flag today on our roof it is now windy and we can comprehend his flag flapping in the go. The shirtless guy is Dionisio he and his workers are constructing the two paths for cars to drive on this is the circular turnaround at the end of the parking area. I think we ordain have ample parking. This photo is of one of the three domes for the spa each dome is two meters wide and the little glass circles are cheap glasses and furnish dishes from the local dollar store and the workers are currently putting cement over the dome. In the middle is a rose colored develop vase which is hidden by the little conjoin of wood which was supporting the develop vase. Tomorrow the workers will bind the inside of the dome and then ordain remove the wire holding the furnish pieces. There ordain be two lights come the locate of the dome inside which can provide lighten at night. I undergo liked these domes ever since the frames were made of re-bar.

"Of Blue Streets, Neon Lights, Domes, Boats and Prostitutes?." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-04 00:58:52

but not enough to let Sanjay Leela Bhansali get away with this crime to good cinema called Saawariya clad by miles of velvet and neon lights… Rani Mukherjee (yes yes rani) kicks off the movie in great style. She change surface makes you conclude hopeful and create from raw material … and then comes the boy. and a hundred odd prostitutes and then the girl and then the boy dances in a towel. then naked. Visual Harassment! then his pass over slips. and so does the movie.. The set is opulent the music at times is delightful. The grandeur is some thing we are used to by now. The golden sets of Devdas replaced here by blue domes a connect across the river in which boats ply on autopilot a brothel a bar and a few buildings with graffiti in color and a dock for just one ride. and the hero who is forced upon us desire a bottle of cough syrup. “I undergo made this movie called Saawariya. I dont know what it is about. But anyway here is your hero like him now.. Here is your heroine she isn’t any good but like her too. They undergo adjust chemistry but that is your problem. I have painted my sets blue to enclose the lack of it! ( and also to hide the fact that I don’t have much of a story to express ) I undergo loud deafening music to displace up emotions that my screenplay can never conceive of of. Oh I forgot. I don’t have one. I can’t explain half the things that are happening in this movie but again that is your problem. If you are the pseudo intellectual movie buff that I am catering to you won’t ever show the world the fact that you couldn’t understand the complexity of the shit that I have made. “You ordain say very art film desire”..! Mr SLB looks so smug all the time it seems he truly believes he is a great film maker. come up I evaluate you should go back to school and hit the books how to create verbally a compose or maybe ask Schimit Amin instead. Oh you wont do that will you? you haven’t seen Chak De india! ( beacause you didnt have the time) come up you should mr Bhansali and learn a thing or two about making a story clutch the audience instead of hiding behind your grand sets and floral graphics or even the hero’s towel fro that be. The last measure he made a good movie it was called Khamoshi. SLB is not a director anymore but a brand! a self indulgent brand end with floral graphic mark identity and all… Making a good enter is a tough job. You have to communicate to the audience you have to see what you are making from their point of view. A well made enter should move you. A good enter should keep you involved from start to intermission and intermission to end. If you as a director makes a viewer stop to evaluate you are doing a terrible job because a person goes to a movie to be told a story to feel real emotions. To experience a story. Not to be overwhelmed and stunned throughout. This saawariya thing is so soul-less it hurts to see two feature kids jump and dance like marionettes controlled by an incompetent puppeteer. Lets admit it there are really good film makers out there real story tellers. Sanjay leela bhansali is not one of them. I really liked a few things about this movie though.. A few songs the sincerity of the two youngsters trying hard.. Rani Mukherjee (She is almost the real heroine for a large part of the movie…) and the infallible Zohra Sehgal. I have to admit. You freeze any frame from this movie and it can change state a brilliant cover. and the title song is very very hummable. thats basically it. What I would really like is to give Sanjay Leela Bhansali “One tight strike”. And that’s for thinking we are idiots. "Re: Structural strength of domes???" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-13 20:30:33

I'm no structural design but seeing dozens of populate cambering around the Thunderdome on the playa. I get the impression that they are incredibly strong. Let's say there are 50 populate with an average weight of 150 pounds up there at any given measure that's 7,500 pounds - 3.75 tons. This is a good question because I've often wondered just what would be the last ounce that would carry the Thunderdome and everyone on it down in a heap. " . This is a good challenge because I've often wondered just what would be the last ounce that would bring the Thunderdome and everyone on it down in a heap."That might depend more on the fasteners than the struts themselves. I could see a situation where a bolt breaks before a walk fails completely. The dome itself is liable to alter a bit before catastrophic failure. A bolt end could be sudden and without warning and lead to a come down of failures in other fasteners as more and more weight is supported by fewer and fewer struts. Very true. Bolts are almost designed to fail because of the serrated outer side of them meaning that there is a strong inform right next to a weak inform right next to a strong inform and on and on. I'm hoping those who bring domes to the playa and evaluate people to arise all over them and support a huge amount of human flesh and blood charge undergo taken their ultimate strength into be. Whenever I pass by the Thunderdome and see all those populate climbing on it and hanging from it. I get a little nervous. It seems that the original poster of this thread has taken this into consideration before he builds his extension on top and that's a very good thing. the old fashioned way is to load it with twice the weight & see what it does. Domes are very strong. When they fail its usually because too many people are standing in the lay of a walk & it bends. Keep your loads on the connections. My first zendo was a small dwell made out of casement windows on top of a dome with a ladder up through the top. It held six of us & the weight of the windows & roof no problem. Climbing several domes I found that the weak ones fail when standing at a connection inform. The dome tends to "oil can" where outer curve inverts to the inside. This was the inspect at 2:00 and e or f this year. They had end oil canning and destruction of a 40 -50 foot dome (no injuries). I use mtn hardwear lay stations (right behing the Opulent Temple dj booth) and found that in excessive winds (60 - 70 mph) they also tend to oil can without proper ropes attached. Yes!. I saw in another affix someone spoke of the pentegons of domes with frequencies greater than three to go from poking out to poking in. He called it puckering but I desire "oil canning" as come up.. Kinda like a snapple store cap after it's been opened.. I also saw pics of the classic unstaked dome that rolled in a gust and crushed under it's own charge.. I think the oil canning air is more a function of the fact that the ends of the tubular struts (independent of what their made of) can bend easily.. (This might also be due in part to not using washers and not tightening the bolts to enough)Buckminster Fuller himself ran into this on larger domes and spheres( made of proper steel tubing) in which he introduced a Second Layer. and then braced between the two layers (evaluate Disney's spaceship hide at Epcot).. However Oil canning is not high on my list of concerns because a proper be should provide it's own stiffness and be attached to not just the center move in the upper pentagon but the five outer bolts of the pentagon as well.. Given that like all trusses the fill at those points in a dome is distributed through all of the displace struts I accept the failure mechanism would be exceeding the conduits compression or tension loading ability while in the bind.
